It takes a lot of effort to unload them, put them up in noticeable places and then put them away once the holiday is finished. Valentine&#8217;s Day, for example, just wrapped up, but now retailers have to ramp up for Easter and St. Patrick&#8217;s Day.</p>
<p>The good news, however, is that digital signage can help simplify this process by projecting decorations directly onto displays, windows, walls and other surfaces via a projector. AtmosFx is one company that provides the service, and in honor Valentine&#8217;s Day, it designed the &#8220;My Valentine&#8221; decoration, which featured candy hearts, roses, Cupid and other decorations at 1080p both horizontally and vertically.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our digital decorations come as high definition mp4 files and can easily be projected or played on monitors, TV, or even digital signs,&#8221; Michael Gills, senior marketing and community manager for AtmosFx, said in an interview.  &#8220;AtmosFX creates digital decorations which are high resolution animations that are customized for different holidays and different uses from projecting spooky ghosts in your window to animating your pumpkins as a live Jack-O-Lanterns to creating 3d characters such as Santa Claus, a singing witch, or scary specters.&#8221;</p>
<p>A spokesperson for The Nutty Squirrel Gelato, a gelato shop based in Washington, said holiday decorations can become quite expensive and corny if not implemented correctly but avoids those issues with the AtmosFX offerings.</p>
<p>&#8220;The simply implemented system creates a destination effect for people to visit and enjoy. It is much more than a basic props and decoration pieces. Systematically progressing scenes draw everyone and keeps them engaged,&#8221; the spokesperson said in an interview.</p>
<p>Although AtmosFX is primarily a consumer product, the company also sells commercial licenses for retailers. Gills believes the platform can help retailers build up their brand with their customers.</p>
<p>&#8220;Customers love holidays and love to be surprised and delighted. Showing seasonal &#8216;spirit&#8217; for a storefront, helps connect customers to a brand. Through adding in a celebratory or startling special effect, you humanize your business and make it a fun experience for your customers,&#8221; Gills said.</p>
<p>AtmosFx provides one season licenses for the digital decorations starting at $200, although it also provides more extensive packages for franchises and large businesses.</p>
<p>This tool fits into a greater benefit of digital signage: the ability to save time while meeting customers in the moment.</p>
<p>With static signs or even poorly managed digital signage, it can be difficult to reach distracted customers. Not to mention it is difficult to keep it updated.</p>
<p>Retailers need to always consider four things when choosing a digital signage tool:</p>
<ul>
<li>How will it improve customer experience?</li>
<li>Do we have the resources for it?</li>
<li>How much time is saved with this tool?</li>
<li>How can we take advantage of special times of the year?</li>
</ul>

<p>As profit margins are squeezed, competition increases and operational costs rise, fast food joints are looking for a new angle to boost revenue. There are many voices offering ideas on how to increase sales in fast food. Many have tried some of those suggestions, without success.</p>
<p>The problem is that many of the suggestions put forward are based on the experiences of fast food chains that have seen success as a result of following such advice. However, tactics used to boost fast food sales by one restaurant won’t necessarily work for the next fast food chain.</p>
<p><strong>Drive thru digital signage gives you the edge</strong></p>
<p>Drive thru digital signage on the other hand is proven to deliver a consistent sales boost on a weekly basis for small and large fast food chains alike.</p>

<li>Segmenting menu items… Point customers to your bestselling menu items rather than having them trawl through your entire menu. This also speeds up the number of orders processed in an hour.</li>

<p>Fast food joints are cashing in on drive thru digital signage because of its ability to attract customers, speed up the drive thru lane and improve the customer experience.</p>
<p><strong>Improving the customer experience is where the money is at</strong></p>
<p>However, digital signage isn&#8217;t a guarantee of more sales. What really drives sales is the way in which your menu is presented at the drive thru. An easy to read menu prompts quicker buying decisions, speeding up the drive thru lane, which ultimately leads to a positive customer experience.</p>
<p>Used correctly, digital signage enables fast food chains to present easily digestible content and, with 74 percent of QSR customers putting an easy to read menu at the top of their list for making a purchase &#8211; according to a study conducted by Panasonic &#8211; a simple menu layout not only attracts customers, it keeps them coming back for more.</p>
<p><strong>Digital Signage is convenient too</strong></p>
<p>Aside from the sales boosting benefits that drive thru digital signage brings to the table, outdoor digital menu boards offer convenience too. Updating menus with new items or price changes can be done almost instantly, whereas a print run to replace static menu boards can take up to two weeks, plus you have to pay for the privilege.</p>
<p>Dayparting is made easier too, fast food chains can switch between breakfast, lunch and main menus, seamlessly. Better still, this can be done across multiple sites so that menus change in sync.</p>
<p>As a means of increasing sales across the fast food industry, digital signage at the drive thru offers the complete package and represents an excellent return on investment. In fact, Eclipse Digital Media estimates that QSRs will recoup the cost of their digital menu board investment anywhere between 9 and 18 months.</p>

These challenges were not in regards to the actual technology, but rather communication, according to Rick Cook, senior manager of U.S. IT restaurant solutions at McDonald&#8217;s at a presentation at Digital Signage Expo.</p>
<p>&#8220;Technology challenges are generally communication challenges,&#8221; Cook said at the event. When the QSR began deploying menu boards, it&#8217;s goal was to improve customer service experience by integrating menu boards with all of its U.S. locations.</p>
<p>This was a massive task, considering the QSR had to deploy 40,000 screens while working with 45 different creative agencies. Other complexities included localized content, specials, FDA regulators, screen size variance and other issues.</p>
<p>Once the screens were actually deployed, however, the company ran into other issues at the individual restaurant level. The company waited three months after initial deployment to run an analysis to identify these key issues. Some of these issues included:</p>
<p><strong>Regional owners having issues with national promos</strong></p>
<p>In the past, McDonald&#8217;s relied on a pull mentality when it came to communication with regional managers, according to Cook. This meant if the company planned to do some sort of national campaign, it would contact the managers directly and tell them how to change the content on the menu boards through the graphical user interface.</p>
<p>The problem with this approach is that some regional managers wouldn&#8217;t read the email, or they wouldn&#8217;t understand the process.</p>
<p>To address this issue, McDonald&#8217;s decided to adopt a push process. The restaurant would simply push this content to the restaurants directly, so that regional owners wouldn&#8217;t have to worry about setting it up.</p>
<p><strong>Outdated GUI</strong></p>
<p>One big challenge for the deployment was integrating the menu boards with outdated GUIs. Cook emphasized that young workers managing the system would not appreciate an unintuitive system.</p>
<p>The restaurant tried to fix this issue by upgrading to a WYSIWYG GUI that allowed users to see changes in real time. The GUI established three categories of menu items; required; default; and local. Required items could not be changed, whereas default could be. Local was populated by local items. If a regional manager chose not to fill the local spot, the system would delete the local option from the menu board and remove the white space.</p>
<p>Cook said that the process would have gone smoother if the restaurant had upgraded the GUI before deploying the digital menu boards.</p>
<p><strong>Communicate, communicate and communicate some more</strong></p>
<p>For large scale deployments, communication and training are absolutely key. &#8220;You have to communicate to thousands of business owners. You have to make sure content managers are on board with the message,&#8221; Cook said.</p>
<p>Cook emphasized that one key way to address this is to make sure senior leadership is championing the technology. It&#8217;s not a matter of the actual technology, it&#8217;s a matter of how well you communicate about the technology.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>About a year ago, <a href="http://digiday.com/brands/tech-startups-favor-outdoor-advertising/">Digiday</a> published an article examining why tech startups favor out-of-home advertising. The article pointed out the irony of a company dedicated to helping brands improve their online marketing, opting to market itself through outdoor ads. While it may seem ironic on the surface, those tech start-ups were — and continue to be — standing out by integrating campaigns across out-of-home and digital. This testifies to the great power of OOH.</p>
<p id="7dcf" class="graf graf--p graf-after--p">It’s not only startups that favor out-of-home. Tech giants Google and Facebook — which claimed almost two-thirds of the $60 billion online advertising market last year — have incorporated OOH into their marketing campaigns too.</p>
<p id="7e9c" class="graf graf--p graf-after--p"><strong class="markup--strong markup--p-strong">#1: Google</strong>. The beauty of OOH is that one can go beyond the boundaries of the traditional canvas and utilize the surrounding environment to make an impact. Google did just that to promote its rebranded app, deploying <a class="markup--anchor markup--p-anchor" href="http://www.adweek.com/adfreak/google-embeds-itself-nyc-some-delightful-site-specific-outdoor-ads-160636" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" data-href="http://www.adweek.com/adfreak/google-embeds-itself-nyc-some-delightful-site-specific-outdoor-ads-160636">site-specific outdoor ads</a> around New York City.</p>

They ran a <a class="markup--anchor markup--p-anchor" href="http://www.adweek.com/news/technology/snapchat-running-sneakily-fun-billboard-ads-only-its-users-will-understand-170377" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" data-href="http://www.adweek.com/news/technology/snapchat-running-sneakily-fun-billboard-ads-only-its-users-will-understand-170377">multi-market campaign</a> with 50 static billboard ads with clever messaging that spoke directly to its users.</p>

Its “<a class="markup--anchor markup--p-anchor" href="http://www.adweek.com/adfreak/apple-putting-users-beautiful-iphone-6-photos-billboards-and-print-ads-163235" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" data-href="http://www.adweek.com/adfreak/apple-putting-users-beautiful-iphone-6-photos-billboards-and-print-ads-163235">Shot on iPhone 6</a>” campaign ran on 10,000+ billboards in 25 countries to showcase the amazing photos that people shot on their iPhones worldwide. The stunning photos also appeared in newspapers, magazines, online and in TV commercials.</p>

<p id="e543" class="graf graf--p graf-after--figure">These campaigns showcase both the effectiveness of OOH in building brand recognition and connecting to consumers who are offline, all while demonstrating the importance of a media mix and great creative.</p>
<p id="d55e" class="graf graf--p graf-after--p">A recent study conducted by The Advertising Research Foundation substantiated the importance of focusing on a media mix, rather than just buying one platform. <a class="markup--anchor markup--p-anchor" href="http://thearf.org/5-cups/the-advertising-research-foundation-reveals-groundbreaking-research-how-advertising-works-today/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" data-href="http://thearf.org/5-cups/the-advertising-research-foundation-reveals-groundbreaking-research-how-advertising-works-today/">[1]</a> Trading traditional media for new media is a mistake. Advertising campaigns which are conducted across multiple media platforms yield a higher reach and ROI. The study also found that a mix of traditional and new media is the most effective media mix. The most optimal media mix includes 22% digital and 78% traditional media. Digital reaches consumers when they are online searching, but OOH is an effective way to inspire consumers to search online.</p>
<p id="f7a3" class="graf graf--p graf-after--p">The best way to inspire consumers to search online is with great creative. 75% of ad impact is determined by creative quality, making creative more important than ever. OOH offers virtually unlimited creative potential. There are creative executions that can only work in OOH (think Google’s campaign #1 in the list above), and simplicity goes a long way (think Facebook’s high impact branding campaign, Snapchat’s campaign speaking directly to insiders, and Apple’s campaign that rewarded its users on a larger-than-life scale).</p>
<p id="904c" class="graf graf--p graf-after--p">While it is true the OOH industry must continue to evolve as technology advances and the media landscape changes, it also means that we mustn’t overlook the power of OOH both creatively and as part of an overall media mix.</p>
